In computer news this week
12/19/2007 With these family holidays coming
up, you need to make some good movies ... Part 6 Over the
past 6 weeks I’ve done a series of shows on using Windows Movie
Maker, and the transcripts and
pictures of everything I’ve done is on my Raw Bytes website: http://www.mtamicro.com/kpbx.html We’ve
been fortunate to get tips from a Pro – PapaJohn, whose
book Microsoft
Windows Movie Maker 2 – Do Amazing Things – is published by
Microsoft press and is available on Amazon and other bookseller websites. The
reason I feel this series is so important is that most people today have
digital cameras which let you take pictures and movies, but most people
don’t know how to get them into computer format, and then on the web to
share with your friends and relatives. Windows Movie Maker is included in
Windows XP and Vista, and is a very good free software tool for converting
your pictures into slideshows and movies. Here’s Papajohn’s
closing comments: PJ: After 6 years of working with
users of Movie Maker, the standard Questions and the Answers I get and give
when I first meet new users still includes these two exchanges... Q... what
computer operating system are you running? A.... Windows XP That
breaks the ice and from there, they are thrilled and eager to go home to try
it... I'd be surprised if most KPBX listeners didn't have the same answers
when first hearing about Movie Maker over this 6 week series. Making a
movie from still pictures or video clips (or both) is fun and easy, as shown
by Frank in his samples over the last two weeks. You usually start with the
clips for the body of a video... all you need to flesh it out is to add an
opening title clip, and some closing credits.... and
cover the whole thing with added background music. For this
holiday season, get and use some of the items in the free Windows Movie Maker
2 Winter Fun Pack 2003 from Microsoft, a professional assortment of added
video effects like falling snowflakes, holiday sound effects, music, pictures
and video clips. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/mmfunpack.mspx Don't
forget Photo Story 3, which I mentioned a few weeks ago... that's your free
utility for making Ken Burns style videos from your still pictures. Here's
the link... Franknote: I’ve downloaded
both of these free Microsoft packages – they’re great and
I’m looking forward to using both of them in my movies and slideshows. PJ: As you get deeper into the
subject, and find yourself running into things you don't understand,
especially when it comes to trying to get different kinds of video files into
Movie Maker from a different kind of camera or places like YouTube, or
making DVDs, don't hesitate to get some help. It could be as easy as checking
the info at PapaJohn's website at www.papajohn.org Franknote: Papajohn’s
website is a treasure chest of information relating to learning Windows Movie
Maker and Photo Story, and also for solving problems you might run into. He has also sent me many example
links of actual Photo Story Slide Show which are included in this transcript
on my Raw Bytes website: Here's a few to pick from a silent
one that shows the zooming power... without losing resolution http://www.papajohn.org/video/PS3-Sample-Echo.wmv a scanned
