Goodbye Vista, Hello Windows 7 ...

If you have a Vista pc and you want to upgrade to Windows 7, you should first download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Utility program from the Microsoft website and run it on your computer, to see what possible problems you may run into upgrading to Windows 7.

Based on the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor report, I downloaded and installed the Vista Service pack 1, as directed, and then I did a backup of my data, and inserted the Windows 7 installation DVD.  The upgrade took a couple hours, with various warnings and various reboots of my system, but it finally came up with my old desktop icons on a new Windows 7 background screen, and I was in a go mode to learn about the various features and benefits.

So far the biggest benefit has been it hasn’t crashed since the upgrade, and I’ve had my computer continuously on and rebooted several times. No hang ups or strange system error messages like I had with Vista, and it might even be a little faster.

If you click on the Start button – right under Help and Support is a section on What’s new in Windows 7, and if you click on that it goes into a web-based  tutorial of major features, and each is shown in a quickly downloaded 7 second video. These include :

Home Group – which is an even easier Networking program to connect all your computers and printers

Jump Lists – to take you right to documents you use frequently

Snap – a quick way to adjust and resize windows

Windows live essentials – a 7 program suite you need to download if you want to use movie maker – photo gallery, and other messaging functions

Windows taskbar – a better taskbar with bigger icons and easily arrange able too. The new feature is that if you have Word and several word documents open – if you touch the word icon on the taskbar you’ll see thumbnails of all the open documents, so you can open the one you want. The way jumps lists work with the new task bar icon is that if you right click on the icon – you’ll see a list of recent documents you’ve worked with.

And one incredible feature which supposedly Vista had to a lesser degree but I never tried out, and which I’m sure every pc user will rejoice at  - a new Windows Search which will find virtually anything by key word or phrase.

Let me ask you this question: Have you ever created a document on your computer, put it somewhere, and then lost it because you couldn’t remember where you put it ?  You can remember what the document was about, maybe remember some words in the document, maybe part of the name, but you just can’t find it anywhere …..

I’ve been using computers regularly since 1977 and I’ve done this many times. The new Windows 7 search feature will save you the embarrassment of losing documents on your own computer, and it will find the words you’re looking for in Microsoft Office as well as Adobe and other format files.

So after a whole 2 weeks of using Windows 7,   he likes   it … Mikey likes it ….. so far ..
