Now anyone can be an internet
video star .. Over the
past few years, there have emerged websites allowing individuals to post
their own videos, for the world to see. These
include the very popular with teenagers myspace.com and fark.com and others like the most-established youtube.com, and newer comers like
google.com aol.com yahoo.com, and now Microsoft of course wanting to get into
established markets with their own “Soapbox on MSN Video”. Microsoft
just did a press release on the product announcing it will be in beta test
immediately, and there are comments about it all over the internet, so I
actually logged into my MSN account - which I have but never use – it
just came with my Qwest DSL – to find out more about it, but
there’s no mention of it on MSN or on the main Microsoft site. Classic
corporate case of the one hand not knowing what the other is doing. Anyone
who has a modern video camera today can now become an instant internet video
star. The majority
of the people who do this are younger, students in high school and college,
and 20 and 30 somethings, who mostly use freehosting sites like http://www.myspace.com. This means that
you can get an internet space for free to publish your own pictures, videos,
blogs, what ever you want the world to see coming from you, and it also
includes email and instant messaging. But with
the cost of website hosting dropping into just a few dollars a years, anyone
can also buy a website domain name and hosting, on some of the major hosting
sites like http://www.godaddy.com. The advantage of this is that you make
your own rules and there’s no censorship, but you do have to know
simple things like how to create your own webpage, blogs etc. I have
done a couple recent shows on the new camera – excuse me – the
personal media player – I bought for my Mississippi Journey –
which takes pictures and movies in full color with sound, and I can easily
upload anything from it directly to my own website. But usually I edit the raw video
footage with windows moviemaker to give it a more professional touch. But it
really is fun and amazing to be able to shoot video or pictures of anything,
and then be able to put it in a free forum where theoretically the entire
world can see it. That’s
why there’s so many online and unedited
pictures and movies of everything from actually footage of war video in Iraq,
to coverage of natural disasters like Katrina, to local arts events, comedy
performances, and a zillion other topics. My
favorite is www.youtube.com, and I have links to
several of my all time favorite music videos on it. Anytime
I’m bogged down in the doldrums of computer work and really need to
take a mental break, I’ll turn up my computer speakers and click on my
link to one of my favorite early rock songs of all time – Jumpin’ Jack Flash by
the Stones -
It
features in full screen mode the early Rolling Stones still playing with
Brian Jones, the true blues heart of the group, a boyish looking Keith
Richards, and Mick Jagger just getting into his glam-rock phase with a little
eye shadow and lipstick – playing to an extremely appreciative dancing
crowd. If this
doesn’t get you going nothing will – welcome to the wide world of
online video ! For Raw Bytes This is Frank Delaney (C) 2006 MTA Micro
