In computer news this week //2009

The integration of computers and television ; it’s going to happen so we might as well get used to it.

A few weeks ago I watched the live Michael Jackson ceremony on CNN, and I became aware of all the tv programs you can now watch on your computer.

The CNN live website Cnn Live  lets you watch several live or rebroadcasts of CNN programs.

I’ve started watching this while I do my exercises, instead of turning on the tv. If you see a CNN live show that will be airing later on, you can set a reminder so that you can watch it.

So I got to wondering what other TV programs can you watch on your computer, and there’s a whole lot.

Let’s start with the tradition tv networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC.

At ABC - http://beta.abc.go.com/shows right now I can watch soap opera previews ..

On All my Children I can take a sneak peek and find out the JR thinks Annie is getting away with murder.

On General Hospital a rekindled romance drives a wedge between mother and son

And on One life to Live Stacy is having her baby …

At NBC I can see their programming schedule, as well as watch partial videos of their shows, like Friday Night Lights, but I have to watch a commercial each time I do that.:

I don’t see any live video here, but there’s a ton of stuff to look at and watch.

On CBS I can watch a highlight of John and Kate’s Season return, but again I have to watch a commercial before I can see it.

The live video – or almost live – they offer is to watch a  rebroadcast of yesterday’s CBS evening news.

Been there – done that – commercial tv is still pretty much a vast wasteland

Turning to other networks, I find that PBS  http://www.pbs.org actually lets you watch whole shows without having to get inundated with commercials.

Under their Watch Video Tab, there’s a big selection of shows you can watch online, and pick shows from the series. I could watch a whole hour of Antiques road show from Hartford Conn, a variety of Bill Moyer’s programs, Frontline episodes, and many others.

I can even watch a short video  of Garrison Keillor – the man on the radio in the red shoes, from the American Masters series.

On a more local tv station, I can watch Northwest Cable News  www.nwcn.com  and see a video of the Blue Angels in Seattle last weekend actually departing Seattle. This is SO cool – they even taxi on the runway and take off in tight formation, but again I have to watch a commercial to see it.

What is it about commercial television – don’t they get the message consumers have had it with watching commercials ?

And I know that one day soon – the television and the computer will become a single home entertainment device – along with the radio, music player and game station, and we’ll be telling our grandkids about how we watched black and white mono tv, even before remote controls were invented.

Grandpa, tell me ‘bout the good old days
