What tribe do you belong to on the Electronic Frontier ?

The Myspace Tribe

Myspace is one of the new internet tribes that truly reflects the youth culture.  It seems to be the primary favorite of high school and college kids, and the emphasis is on social networking and hip humor.

Myspace present its own news and information – similar to CNN – but in a much lighter and younger format.

Today’s big Myspace new story reads: Eskimos attack United States !

“Frustrated by the effects of global warming, the Inuits of the Northwest Passage drop glacial ice on Southern California.

However – opposed to CNN where you click on a News Headline  and immediately go to news story,  at Myspace this story seems to be  hosted on some users webpage, and you wait quite a long time to watch the video.

Then you do see a professionally done video that claims  Eskimos attacked Southern California   -  dropped glacial ice on Los Angeles  from 5000 ft – looking for Bugs Bunny – they found him – shot him – clubbed him “like a baby seal”  – and ate him.  And it has a quote from President Bush in retaliation  banning the sale of Eskimo pie bars, allowing the wiretapping of penguins, and the forced confinement and humiliation of polar bears ...”

Ha ha that’s so funny ........Welcome to Myspace, Dude ...............

Myspace bills itself as a place for friends, and claims to have millions of members. It’s free and easy to sign up for, but asks some odd questions like “Do your parents know you’re creating a page on Myspace and do you have their permission ?  and later they sent me a survey asking me what I wanted to be when I grow up.  Hmmmmmmmmmmm.   let’s see, I’m only 62 now ...

So what can you do on myspace that you can’t do on the internet by yourself ?  I’m not sure. You can talk to people online, make new friends, swap stories, share music, videos, blog, download music videos and films, and create your own social network.

The emphasis appears to be on networking, and linking your page to as many other people’s pages as possible in creating your own network of friends, or as close to friends as you can have in cyberspace. Myspace also provide all kinds of free graphics tools to dress up your personal page and look really cool, or cyberhip.

I have a few adult friends that have myspace pages, and know several musicians that have pages for music contacts etc,

But I felt uncomfortable immediately when I signed up, and just uploaded a picture of myself and waited to see what would happen.  They immediately assigned my a myspace friend – another user who never contacted me, but supposedly was there if I needed help.  2 weeks went by with no contacts, and then just yesterday I got a lovely unsolicited message email  from a young lady named Florrie requesting me to be “be her friend ...”

I clicked on the link in her email  and went to both a message and a semi-nude picture of a young woman who claimed that I could see nude modeling pictures of her if I wanted -

and it  had a link to another website – a VERY ADULT “FRIEND FINDER” WEBSITE –

So it’s obvious that both spammers and porno-vendors cruise myspace pages and are not very restricted in contacting anyone who has a myspace page. Parents and guardians be aware of this,  please.

And Myspace very obviously is not the space for me.
