In computer news this week  06/06/2007

We’ve seen the growth of  tribes on the internet; large colonies of people with similar interests; and we’re beginning to witness a sociological and anthropological evolution of online communities – people who communicate and interact online through the internet.

One of the tribes I belong to is Youtube.  I have several videos I’ve done on my computer, humorous ones and some guitar and music videos, and although I have them on my website, I was looking to join an online community that has high traffic with millions of visitors.

I thought I might meet other people interested in making movies using digital cameras and computers, and I wanted to see what other people had done with these technologies, and I was already familiar with youtube, as I keep getting emails from friends with links to humorous or educational youtube videos.

So I went out to www.youtube.com to check it out and see about becoming a member.

First of all the price is right – it’s free, and it’s relatively easy and intuitive to join and get started on.

Their opening screen says it all:

What Is YouTube?

YouTube is the home for video online:

  • Watch millions of videos
  • Share favorites with friends and family
  • Connect with other users who share your interests
  • Upload your videos to a worldwide audience

Sign up now to join the YouTube community!

To join Youtube all you have to do is click on the Signup button and answer a few questions and give some information:

So you give your name and email address, create a password for yourself, tell where you live, and if you’re male or female, your birthdate, agree to the terms of use – which I’m sure nobody reads – and Voila ! You’ve got your own Youtube account and now the entire wired world is the audience for your videos.

Let me point out that Youtube is both the technologically correct and politically correct way today of making your friends and relatives aware that you have  become a film producer and are now making movies. By having a Youtube site you can now send emails to people telling them what you have movies they may want to see , and by placing a link to your youtube movies in the email so they can click on the link and see your video if they want to.

The technologically and politically INCORRECT  way to do this – which unfortunately many web troglodytes still use – is to actually email your video to people who may have no interest in seeing it, and just get really irritated receiving a 5 megabytes email from you which clogs their email box and might take forever to receive if they still have dialup.

  • That’s why the operative phrase  on the Youtube Main screen is “Share favorites with friends and family”
  •

Would you like to share and see a movie of my gargoyle kids, or my trickless dog, or me making a fool out of myself trying to do something which I think is clever but you think is painful ?  If not, don’t click on the link in this email.

I already had dozens of Youtube videos favorited, mostly music videos. and I was anxious to learn how to get my own videos on Youtube.

Next week on Raw Bytes, how it all works in the Youtube world.
