Google Drive now offers everyone Free cloud computing

The current buzzword in the industry for the past couple years has been cloud computing – having the files you use stored online somewhere – or in a cloud – so that you can access them from anywhere.

The concept is that you can access and work with your files anywhere in the world as long as you can get on the internet and get to your own personal google drive cloud storage. You don’t have to carry your portable computer with you, or a flashdrive.

Google offers everyone 5 Gigabytes of storage which is quite a lot, and it’s free – all you have to do is create a free Google email account on your computer – download the google drive program and install it, and then drag files into your google drive folder so that you can access them from anywhere.

When you look at your computer’s components using Windows Explorer - Google Drive shows up as a separate folder.

One of the biggest advantages of Google drive  is its ability to recognize and open and work more than 30 file types, including photos, documents, audio files and videos.

This is one of the biggest features of Google Drive. It’s not just online storage of your files –it’s online access to your files and the software to work with them.

Google Drive gives you instant access to Google Docs -  an easy-to-use online word processor, spreadsheet and presentation editor that enables you to create, edit and store your documents online and share instantly and securely, and collaborate online in real time.

You can create new documents from scratch or upload existing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. There's no software to download, and all your work is stored safely online and can be accessed from any computer. Everything you need is up in the Cloud.

This means you can get on a computer anywhere, access your files you have stored on Google Drive – modify them using Google Apps – resave them – and then when you get back to your own computer  you can access the newer modified version of the file you have stored on your Google Drive.

You will be able to access Google Drive from your Mac, PC or Android device. Users will be able to work in real-time on documents, spreadsheets and presentations and have the option to receive notifications when there are comments on shared items.

Google Drive comes with 5GB of storage space for free. If you need more, the smallest amount of storage you can buy is 25GB for $2.49/month or $29.88/year. You can also purchase 100GB at a cost of $4.99/month or $59.88/year. If that's not enough, Google offers additional storage plans ranging from 200GB all the way up to 16TB.

You can learn all about what Google drive is at http://www.drive.google.com and see a demonstration of the program, and then download it if you want.
