In computer news this week 04/02/2008

The Web is a big candy store, and what you see is what you get, or you can get ... Part 2

Today we’ll talk about capturing movies and other media that you see on the Web to your computer.

One of the most exciting things about the Web today are all the sites that let you play and watch live video on your computer screen; including tv shows and movies.  Probably the biggest of these sites – which has now become both a noun and a verb in popular computer lexicon similar to Google – is Youtube.com .  You can go to youtube and type in any subject you’re interested in looking for – like  Spokane Washington

And find pages of movies which have Spokane Washington in their descriptions, see thumbnails of the movies, and then actually watch these movies on your computer.

You can literally spend most of your life watching Youtube movies, and it becomes very addictive.  Ok I do spend hours doing this and it’s great fun – you can type in virtually anything and find movies about the topic.  I believe Youtube is the biggest video site on the web today.

You can also watch rebroadcasts of current and old tv shows like the Alfred Hitchcock Hour., and I had done a Raw Bytes show on that a few weeks ago.

And you can bookmark all your favorite videos so you can click and watch them anytime you want.  But in our real world of excesses and instant gratification,  our virtual reality world is even more voracious, and now most web surfers want more than watching movies or tv shows – they want to be able to download them on their computers and ipods and mp3 players, and be able to watch them anytime – anywhere.

One company whose video capture/conversion products I have used for a long time are those made by Applian Technologies , a company who offers a suite of software products for capturing internet video and music files.

Applian offers both simple capture utilities so that you can capture internet media and convert it to popular formats, or a power user suite. I use their Replay Media Catcher to capture all internet video. I just click on the icon on my desktop and it automatically starts recording and will capture any video in a .flv format.

Then I use another of their products – Replay Converter – to convert to the popular .wmv Windows Media Video format, which is the movie standard format for the WEB.

I am a heavy user of Windows Movie Maker for editing videos, but Replay media suite does have movie editing capabilities.

You can actually download any of their products on a trial basis from their website.

Another nice feature they offer is that you can go to their home page  and type in the name of the video or audio website you want to record,  and they will tell you the exact product you need.

In terms of copyrights on media, I know Youtube requires you to state that you are the owner of the copyright of the material you upload to your Youtube Channel, and after that I think it’s assumed it’s going to be downloaded – not just watched.

The technology and laws related to this seem to be changing daily.

Next week I’ll talk about other online sites you can use for media conversion.
