In computer news this week 03/26
/2008 The Web is a big candy store, and
what you see is what you get, or you can get ... Going
over some basic facts about pictures on the WEB or the internet as it is also
called. When you
connect to the internet through your computer, everything you see on your
screen – each web page – picture – movie – everything
goes somewhere after you’ve clicked off them. It
actually gets stored on your computer as temporary internet files, usually in a folder your browser creates named
temporary internet files or something similar. And those
files stay on your computer’s hard disk until you remove them, usually
by clicking on the Tools – Internet Options Menu and clicking on the
choice to Delete temporary files in your Browsing History, and on the next
screen - Choosing to delete just your temporary internet files. There’s
other information there you don’t want do delete, so be careful.
A lot of
people aren’t aware that virtually everything you see on your computer
screen when you surf the web, actually gets stored on your computer, and
these files could build up and eventually fill up your hard disk. They also create a trail of evidence
that computer forensic people can retrieve from your computer. So you need to
delete your temporary internet files periodically. But
sometimes you’ll see something graphical on the web you’d actually
like to save, like a picture. To do this, usually you go to the web page you
want, say www.kpbx.org - and right click
on the image you’d like to save, say the picture of the Capital Steps.
When you right click on any web image, a menu pops up, and you can to select
the Save Image As option, then another menu will popup and you can save it to
anywhere on your computer that you wish.
Actually
anything graphical you see on your computer screen – you can save to
your computer – you just need a little know how and sometimes some special
software. You also need to be aware that many images are copyrighted and you
cannot use them freely. An old
time hacker trick I learned decades ago in the old DOS world which now has
carried over to the Windows world – is the art of screen capture. This just
requires your know how, and another standard windows program – windows
paint – which has been bundled on all versions of Microsoft windows. This is
particularly useful when you’re creating instruction manuals or
documentation of some project . Right now
I’m writing this show using Microsoft word, and if I want to capture
the screen I’m working on – I just press Alt Printscreen –
I hold down the Alt key and then tap the Printscreen key. This actually puts
a picture of this screen in a temporary windows buffer. Now I’ll open
up a copy of windows paint and I can click on Edit –
Paste – and a picture of my Word screen now gets pasted into windows
paint, which I can edit, cut and clean up, and then save as a file anywhere I
want, under any filename I want.
This same
process works on any internet screen you see also. Next week
we’ll talk about how you can save other internet graphics, like movies,
using special software. |
