Watching movies and tv shows on your computer ...

KPBX Film Critic Bob Glatzer always tells us the good movies to see, and you can go to his website Movies101.com to see reviews of movies going back over a decade, so that you know what to pick out at the video store.

Recently Bob reviewed the movie about Bob Dylan, I’m Not There. One of Dylan’s famous songs is “The Times They are A-changing”,  and the times certainly are a-changing when it comes to watching movies or tv shows in today’s technological world.

I know people who don’t have any kind of cable tv or a tv set, but they’re able to watch movies  and tv shows. They get a dvd at the video store, and watch it on their computer.  DVD drives are a standard part of any computer you buy today, so you just pop the dvd in – take a break from whatever tasks you usually do on your computer – and enjoy your popcorn coke and milk duds while you watch a movie.

The new monitor I got with my Dell computer is almost as big as my tv set; and I have watched dvd movies on it, but I prefer to leave my computer office and sit in an easy chair in front of my tv/dvd and watch them there.

But the television times are a-changing too – and there’s a lot of tv shows you can watch on your computer today. All of the major networks are now offering free reruns of their major current shows, or old classic shows , though the internet - on your computer.

For example, I was working this morning and missed Obama’s speech on race, but I was able to go to Fox News and watch the entire half hour speech hours after it had aired, full screen on my computer.

Fox News has a huge online library of video news clips from years ago online – and clips from their current shows. They’re free to watch, but there’s a commercial you have to view first before you can see them. Of course you can turn the sound off on the commercial, just like you do on your tv set.

Jumping over to CBS News, you can watch full episodes of their shows like Big Brother, Survivor, or Jericho, or excerpts from shows like Letterman’s Late Show.

On Abcnews

or NBC it’s the same.

They all have a Watch Video menu selection. You can watch full episodes of Friday Night Lights on NBC if you’d like, or maybe you’d prefer to see classic tv shows like The Alfred Hitchcock Hour or revert to your child state and watch Buck Rogers.

Hey you know this is a better selection of programming than I have on my regular tv ...  how many times have you started channel surfing and there’s just nothing on ?  Well get up and go to your computer – the programming’s great and you can go back to classic tv shows if you want !

I’d tell you more- but I have to watch The Young and the Restless on my computer right now ..
