An old house stands empty and abandoned, except for 2 chairs which stand side by side in

one of the  rooms on the main floor. This is the story.

D                                           G                               A                          G           D

Lookin' back, through my memories, There's the house, where as a child I grew,

D                                             G                             A            G                          D

A sitting room, we called the parlor, And those 2 chairs, I think of what they knew.

               A                            G                D                         A           G                          D

Those 2 chairs, where once sat a young couple, A courtin' time, each hoping love would grow,

D                                        G                              A                  G                           D

And in time, they became lovers, And those 2 chairs, would watch our family grow.

D                                           G                        A                          G                D

One warm Spring day, a wedding party, Gathered round, to hear them say their "I do's",

D                                                   G                          A         G                          D

Guitar and songs, heard till wee hours, A man and wife, whispering "I love you",

                  A                            G                D                         A           G             D

In those 2 chairs, they made plans for the nursery, What if a girl, and what if it's a boy,

D                                        G                          A                   G                           D

And in time, came happy children, To fill our house, and to fill their lives with joy.

                  A                  G                D                               A         G                       D

In those 2 chairs, they talked of kindergarten, First day of school, I hope the weather's fair,

D                                                   G                           A               G                                   D

And don't forget, the bus comes early, He'll need a lunch, and don't forget to comb his hair.

                  A                  G                D                               A         G                       D

In those 2 chairs, they talked about recitals, she'll need a dress, and ribbons for her hair,

D                                                     G                           A                    G                                 D

And there were plays, and music lessons, just turn around, there's a young man standing there.

D                                        G                         A                    G                                D

A snowy night, corsage, tuxedo, the senior prom, do you recall when we went, dear,

D                                              G                  A       G                        D

I'll never sleep, until the car's back, I worry so, I wish I could be there.

                  A                  G                     D                                     A         G         D

In those 2 chairs, they heard about the dance band, the high school gym, decorated fine,

D                                                G                              A       G                            D

Just turn around, they're off to college, their letters home, gee, are they still mine?

                  A                  G                     D                           A                  G                    D

In those 2 chairs, they planned for graduations, got that first job, can they make it on their own,

D                                                         G                           A           G                      D

And then one day,  the house was  empty, the babies gone, and now we're all alone.

                   A                  G                         D                     A            G               D

In those 2 chairs, they heard  she was expecting, What if a girl, and what if it's a boy,

D                                           G                                  A               G                            D

And in time, came their grandchildren, To fill their house, and again their lives with joy.

                   A                  G                     D                       A            G                     D

In those 2 chairs, they talked about the future, whatever comes, we have each other, dear,

D                                                     G                         A             G                          D

And then one day, the chairs were empty, 2 rich full lives, and now we shed our tears.

D                                           G                               A                          G           D

Lookin' back, through my memories, There's the house, where as a child I grew,

D                                             G                             A                  G                         D

A sitting room, we called the parlor, And those 2 chairs, how I miss what they knew.
